Dr. Kait Al is the Miriam Burnett Research Chair in Urological Sciences and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Microbiology & Immunology and Surgery (Division of Urology) at Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. She completed her undergraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral training in Microbiology and Immunology at Western University.
Dr. Al's research investigates the role of bacteria and the human microbiome in urologic health and disease. Her work focuses on understanding how microbial communities influence kidney stone disease, urinary tract infections, urologic cancers, and more. Rather than studying organs or microbes in isolation, her research considers the human host and its resident microbial communities as an integrated biological system to better understand disease development, progression, recurrence, and treatment response. Her research integrates next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, and experimental in vitro and in vivo models, including Drosophila melanogaster, to identify mechanisms of host–microbe interactions and develop microbiome-based approaches to improve patient care.
