Retirement: Dr. Tony Rupar

Dr. Tony Rupar is retiring as Head of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at London Health Sciences Centre effective May 31, 2025. Dr. Rupar has had a 40+ year long, distinguished career beginning at the Child and Parent Resource Institute (CPRI) and the Western Department of Biochemistry. He is the past Director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at CPRI and the past Chair of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry in the Department of Biochemistry at Western. Dr. Rupar has held many leadership positions outside of London, such as chairing the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory Committee at the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and chairing Ontario’s Newborn Screening Advisory Committee. Advocating for newborn screening has been a distinct for Dr. Rupar’s clinical work, given its importance in diagnosing children with treatable diseases and preventing lifelong disability. Other areas in which he has been passionately involved include developing treatment for metachromatic leukodystrophy, an inherited neurodegenerative disorder as well as the delivery of genetic health care to Amish and Mennonite communities. Dr. Rupar has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has been instrumental in building a legacy at LHSC as one of the key providers of biochemical genetics testing in Canada.

Thank you for your service, friendship, and mentorship Dr. Rupar. Best wishes for a healthy and happy retirement.
