The Transplant Immunology Lab at University Hospital is proud to celebrate one of their own. Senior Medical Laboratory Technologist, Dave Beaune, has been recognized with the first annual Drs. Vipin and Bhooma Bhayana Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine.
Known amongst his colleagues as their “fearless leader,” Dave embodies dedication, innovation, and compassion in everything he does. Whether it’s midday or midnight, he is always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and ensure his team feels supported and valued. His openness to ideas, combined with his deep expertise, has fostered a culture where collaboration and improvement thrive.
Over the past year, Dave has led numerous initiatives that have transformed the way the Transplant lab operates. He has developed innovative quality control measures, refined standard operating procedures, and introduced new systems to minimize error—particularly in complex workflows where accuracy is critical. His improvements have streamlined turnaround times, expanded the range of tests offered, and most importantly, ensured patients receive accurate results more quickly.
Dave has also been instrumental in advancing new technologies, such as cell-free DNA testing, coordinating closely with cardiology and transplant teams to navigate approvals and ensure safe patient care. Beyond technical innovation, he brings creativity and heart into the workplace. His annual tradition of “The Labbies”—a lighthearted recognition of each team member’s contributions—has become a cherished celebration that strengthens morale and camaraderie.
What makes Dave’s achievements even more remarkable is the resilience he has shown in the face of personal hardship. Dave has continued to dedicate himself wholeheartedly to his work and to supporting his colleagues. His perseverance and commitment to patient care, even in difficult times, speak volumes about his character. Thanks to his leadership, the Transplant Immunology lab has achieved new heights benefiting not only the staff but also patients and the broader hospital community. His vision and determination continue to shape the future, and his example inspires us all.
Please join us to congratulate Dave Beaune on this well-deserved recognition. The entire PaLM team is fortunate to have him as a mentor, leader, and colleague, and we are proud to see his extraordinary contributions honored with the Drs. Vipin & Bhooma Bhayana Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine.
