Interventional Radiology Residency Training Program
Program and Eligibility
Interventional Radiology (IR) at Western University Schulich Medicine & Dentistry is a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)–accredited specialty program. It is open to graduates of an RCPSC accredited Canadian Diagnostic Radiology residency. The IR program is two years in duration (PGY6–7) but may be completed in a single year (PGY6) when the trainee has carried forward the necessary number and types of rotations from Diagnostic Radiology in accordance with the IR Specialty Training Requirements. Completion of a scholarly research project is a core program requirement and is necessary for RCPSC certification in Interventional Radiology. Graduates are eligible to write the RCPSC certifying examination in IR.
Program Structure
The IR residency is delivered across three teaching sites in London, Ontario: Victoria Hospital, University Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. The curriculum centers on longitudinal, year long core rotations in Interventional Radiology at all sites, and includes outpatient IR clinic, non invasive vascular imaging, and a scholarly research project. Educational activities include journal club, morbidity and mortality rounds, quality assurance/improvement rounds, interesting case rounds, multidisciplinary rounds, and teaching responsibilities for Diagnostic Radiology residents rotating through IR.
Strengths
The program provides comprehensive training across the full spectrum of Interventional Radiology — from routine procedures to complex, high acuity care — preparing graduates to practice independently with confidence and skill. Key strengths include:
- A strong clinical focus with outpatient IR clinic exposure, inpatient admitting privileges, inpatient consultations, and integrated multidisciplinary care.
- High volume interventional oncology (including Y90/selective internal radiation therapy, TACE, percutaneous ablation) and advanced hepatobiliary interventions (including TIPS and portal procedures).
- A high faculty to learner ratio and a collegial, learner centred culture that supports individualized training and professional development.
- Opportunities for residents to tailor parts of the program to their career goals and to participate actively in program quality improvement initiatives.
- Optional exposure to pediatric interventional radiology at Victoria Hospital, covering both vascular and non vascular procedures (for example: vascular anomalies, vascular access, gastrointestinal and oncology interventions).
These elements combine to offer a rigorous, flexible training environment designed to produce capable, well rounded interventional radiologists.
