On May 12, the invitational symposium entitled "Canadian Medicare 2017: Historical Reflections, Future Directions" featured leading health care policy makers and medical historians to discuss such issues as lengthy waiting issues, physicians as stewards of medicare, and more. Historians played a key role in delivering papers and animating discussions, including University of London's Virginia Berridge who spoke on "Why Policy Needs History (and Historians)."

International experts and global thought leaders came together to discuss history and engage in debate on how to solve present and future challenges in Canadian Medicare. Several papers highlighted the experiences of delivering publicly-funded health care in Israel, Australia and the United Kingdom, which offered interesting comparative scenerios for Canadian policy makers to consider. Symposium proceedings will be published in the Journal of Health Economics, Policy and Law.

Schulich Medicine professors Shauna Devine, Shelley McKellar and medical student Ariel Gershon attended the symposium, which was organized by Associated Medical Services Inc in celebration of their 80th anniversary.
