Ariel Gershon, Meds 2019, awarded a 2017 Hannah Summer Studentship

Congratulations to Ariel Gershon, Medicine Class of 2019, who has been awarded a 2017 Hannah Summer Studentship for his project -- "History of self injurious behaviours and catatonia in intellectual disabilities and ASD." Ariel will be pursuing this research project under the supervision of Professor Edward Shorter, Jason A. Hannah Professor of the History of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and cross-appointed as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Ariel's proposed study is one of four history of medicine projects, from a competitive national competition, being funded this summer.

The Hannah Summer Studentship offers undergraduate students an opportunity to study and learn the techniques of historical research and to encourage future serious study of medical history. This studentship, in the amount of $5,500, supports research in the areas of history of health, disease, or medicine, broadly defined. The proposed project must be of a size capable of completion during the three-month period of the Studentship.

The funds are provided by Associated Medical Services Inc., a significant sponsor of medical history research and activities in Canada. The studentship is administered in partnership with the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) which is responsible for adjudicating the applications.

We wish Ariel a productive summer working on this research project, and hope to hear more about it at next year's Osler Society!
