Joel J Gagnier is a Clinical Epidemiologist and Associate Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in the Department of Surgery, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He is the Field Leader of the master’s program in Clinical Epidemiology and Research Management. Dr. Gagnier’s research program focuses on clinical and methodological research related to musculoskeletal conditions and clinical care and the applications of AI and Machine learning to Clinical Trial design and implementation. Dr. Gagnier earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and another bachelor’s in philosophy and religious studies in 1996. He then entered a private medical school, the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, and earned an ND degree after which he opened a private practice which he ran successfully until 2010. In 2005 he completed an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and Health-Care research at the University of Toronto and in 2010 he completed a PhD in medical sciences with a concentration in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Toronto, both under the supervision of Dr. Claire Bomabrdier. He was awarded Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) fellowships during his MSc and PhD. During 2009 and 2010 he completed his postdoctoral training under Dr. Hal Morgenstern at the University of Michigan in the Department of Epidemiology for which he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the CIHR. Dr. Gagnier is a member of the CONSORT Group, the Cochrane Collaboration Musculoskeletal Group, Back Review Group, Bias Methods Group, past Chair of the Strategies in Clinical Research Section of the Orthopaedic Research Society, an editor and editorial board member of several peer-reviewed scientific journals, and a board member of several research societies. He has received over 20 million dollars in research funding, published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters and given over 300 lectures and workshops at local, national and international scientific meetings. He is in the top 1% of cited scientists worldwide.
Dr. Gagnier is the Field Leader of the Clinical Epidemiology and Research Management (CERM) Program through the Advanced Health Care Practice (AHCP) Master’s degree at Western University. The CERM program is designed to prepare health professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct and manage clinical research.

Research Interests
- Dr. Gagnier’s research interests include: evidence-based medicine, randomized controlled trial methods and reporting, systematic review methods and reporting, biostatistics, health measurement scales, patient safety initiatives and generally in musculoskeletal conditions. His current research focuses on perioperative pain control, multi-centered clinical research, advancing the properties of outcome measurement scales, bias in patient reported outcomes, AI and Machine Learning in clinical trials, the quality and reporting of clinical research, surgical safety, and the efficacy of interventions for orthopaedic conditions and musculoskeletal injuries.
