Short Biography:
Dr. Kelly Anderson is a Canada Research Chair in Public Mental Health Research, and an Associate Professor and Graduate Chair in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Western University. She leads a research program in public mental health, and her research interests lie at the intersection of population health and health services research. She is interested in the risk, course, and outcome of mental illness for different population groups, as well as in the social determinants of health service access and utilization. She has a particular interest in the mental health of adolescents and young adults, and her research to date has typically focused on first-episode psychosis and early intervention services.

Abstract:
This presentation will summarize findings from a program of research focused on psychotic disorders among migrant groups in Ontario. Research using population-based data suggest that these groups have an increased risk of developing a psychotic illness, face disparities in access to psychiatric treatment and more aversive contacts with services, and are perceived to exhibit different symptom and behavior profiles at first hospitalization. Recent evidence on second-generation migrants and novel risk factors, such as migrant first language, will be presented, and future directions for this body of work will be discussed.
