Short Biography:
Dr. Hiroshi Nishiura is a newly joined professor at our Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics from this November. Hiroshi is a theoretical epidemiologist with strong research experience and track record in vaccine studies, emerging disease studies, and epidemic modeling. As a research technique, he uses mathematical and statistical models for all of his original studies. His research interests span the areas of statistical epidemiology of infectious diseases, epidemiological modeling and biomathematical formulation of the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. He acted as a member of the advisory board of COVID-19 control of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan and also served as a member of the Tokyo Center for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control.
Abstract:
I present how we assess measles transmission risk during global resurgence in 2026, presenting a case study in Japan. We analyzed cluster-size distribution and serological datasets, estimating the effective reproduction number (Re). We show that current Re remains below one, but repeated importations may trigger outbreaks. I'd like to discuss how the epidemic in Canada differs from a very uniform population Japan.
Area of Research:
Infectious diseaes epidemiology; mathematical modelling
