Looking to sharpen your skills and strengthen your CV before the new semester?

The Western University Epidemiology and Biostatistics Student Council (WEBSC) is thrilled to host the 2025 EpiBio Summer Workshop!

This year’s workshop will take place on Thursday, August 28th, and features three sessions:

Workshop 1

ProfessorDr. Guangyong Zou

Title: "Distribution-free methods for randomized controlled trials"

Conventional nonparametric methods such as the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney technique cannot be used to estimate treatment effects or to adjust for covariates in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Recently, we have successfully developed and published a general regression approach that can estimate treatment effects and adjust covariate without making distributional assumptions for the outcome data, which can be binary, ordered category, and continuous. We quantify treatment effect by the win probability (WinP) that a participant in the treatment group has a better than (or wins over) a control participant.  We first use ranks to transfer each observation into a win fraction to reflect the fraction of times that the observation wins over all observations in the comparison group. We then apply linear regression to the win fractions for WinP estimation and sample size planning. Each attendant of this workshop will have hands-on experience of using SAS or Stata to analyze real RCT data using our new approach and to calculate sample size for future RCTs for estimating WinP.

Time: 9:00 am-11:00 am

Workshop 2

ProfessorDr. Egide Kalisa
Title: "Global Environmental Health - perspectives from both high-income and low- and middle-income countries."
Time: 11:30 am-1:30 pm

Workshop 3

ProfessorDr. Marnin Heisel
Title: "Grant-Writing Skills"
Time: 2:00 pm-4:00 pm

The workshop will be hosted in a flexible hybrid format, allowing participants to join either online (via Zoom) or in person at PHFM 3015.

Registration Fee: $10 per workshop, or the full-day pass for $20.

To reserve your spot, please complete the registration form.

Payment can be made via e-transfer (details in form) or in cash outside PHFM 3015 (Western Centre for Public Health and Family Medicine). If you have any questions, please contact Ruiming Han.

Don't miss this opportunity to develop new research skills under the guidance of our faculty members from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. We can't wait to see you at the WEBSC Summer Workshop!
