Abstract:
Health administrative data is rich. Clinical questions about diagnostics and therapeutics can be readily answered. It is tempting to pursue these questions rather than doing a laborious chart review or creating an expensive registry. However, health administrative databases are not created for research purposes and thus may not be as accurate as we hope. Through validation work, we can determine how much to trust the codes we use to answer our research questions. This talk will explore validation work in Ontario, the process of validating codes, and will provide the audience with some guiding principles.
