Women in Medicine mentorship evening

The Women in Medicine group organized an evening of mentorship with speed networking. The evening gave medical students to a chance to chat with physicians in the specialized fields of family medicine, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, palliative care, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology to talk about any aspect of medicine unique to women in a supportive environment.

The Group is student-led interest group at Schulich Medicine committed to creating a safe space for female medical students, residents and physicians in Windsor to discuss important issues and to promote the well-being of women in the medical profession.

“Many of the issues we discuss are systemic barriers for us in the medical profession, like the pay gap, leadership, sexual harassment and work-life balance,” said group founder Adrina Zhong, Medicine Class of 2021. “The Women in Medicine group promotes a culture of equity.”

Groups of two to three students rotated to different tables throughout the night. By the end of the evening, guests had the opportunity to meet more than 11 women in the medical profession.

“We're at a time where there are more female physicians than ever before, yet there are still unique biases and hurdles for women in the medical profession,” said Zhong. “We are just trying to find solidarity and strength to discover our full potentials as future female physicians. Of course, our efforts are not alone; we stand on the shoulders of the amazing female physicians who came before us. This is why mentorship is such an important component of our group's mandate.”

Currently, the group has 54 people across both campuses subscribed on the Hippocratic Council list and more than 100 active members in the Facebook group. The group meets every six to eight weeks.
