School Naming Conventions

When using the School’s name in writing, upon first reference to the School, the full Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University must be used .  

Upon a second reference the only acceptable short form is Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, or the School, with a capital 'S'.

When referring to either the Medicine or Dentistry aspects of the School either Schulich Medicine or Schulich Dentistry is acceptable. However, identifying a separate ‘Schulich School of Medicine’ or ‘Schulich School of Dentistry’ is not allowed.

Please note: The “Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry” is no longer used in either formal or informal communications.

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry can never be referred to as simply ‘Schulich’ or as SSMD.  The full name, or approved short-forms (listed above) must be used.

Department and Division Names

The ‘wordmark’ for each department and division will be standardized going forward, and will simply be the name of the department written in Benton or Arial Font, no bigger than 18pt size. Each template included on our Template Page will have a spot marked for where a department name can be included, and will outline the appropriate size of font to be used.

Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Office/Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program

The official name of the administrative office for undergraduate medical education is ‘Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Office'. Upon first reference, the full name should be used. An acceptable form to be used on second and subsequent references is ‘UME Office’. No other names or acronyms have been created or should be used. The UME Office should not, under any circumstances, be referred to as ‘UGE’, this acronym was officially amended more than 10 years ago.

The official name of the doctor of medicine program at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry is the 'Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program'. Upon first reference in any document the full name should be used. An acceptable form to be used on second and subsequent references is ‘MD Program’. The MD Program should not, under and circumstances, be referred to as the ‘UME Program’.

The UME Office supports the MD Program which contains 23 individual ‘courses’. Do not refer to individual courses as ‘blocks’.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus

Upon first reference, the full name of the School, and the program, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus must be used. Upon second reference, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus, or simply, Windsor Campus can be used.  Please note, the symbol between the name ‘Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’ and Windsor Campus must be a hyphen, not any other symbol.  

Distributed Education

The official name of the administrative office for distributed medical education is ‘Office of Distributed Education’. Upon first reference, the full name should be used. The full name is the only acceptable form. No acronyms have been created or should be used.

Distributed Education Academies

The official name of the distributed education program across the region is ‘Schulich Medicine Distributed Education’. Upon first reference in any document the full name should be used. An acceptable form to be used on second and subsequent references is ‘Schulich Medicine DE’.

When referring to a specific area within the region where distributed education is delivered, the word ‘Academy’ and the region will be identified. This will only occur in the cases of the regions (formerly known as hubs). For example:

Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Elgin-Middlesex Academy
Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Grey-Bruce Academy
Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Kent-Lambton Academy
Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Huron-Perth Academy
Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Oxford Academy
Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Essex Academy

The official names, as referenced above, must be used upon first reference in any document.

An acceptable form to be used on second and subsequent references is ‘Schulich Medicine DE – Region Academy’. For example:

Schulich Medicine DE – Elgin-Middlesex Academy

References made to a particular partnership within an academy would be presented in the following manner:

St. Thomas General Hospital within Schulich Medicine DE – Elgin-Middlesex Academy or
Chatham-Kent Family Health Team, a partner of the Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – Kent-Lambton Academy

The name of an Academy cannot stand alone without inclusion of Schulich Medicine Distributed Education – either immediately before the name of the Academy, or as part of a sentence. For example:

The town of Hanover is a partner of the Schulich Medicine Distributed Education program within the Grey-Bruce Academy.

Western University Name

In 2012, when Western University re-branded, the school’s name changed from The University of Western Ontario to Western University.  The name ‘The University of Western Ontario’ should no longer be used.

Upon first reference, the University should be referred to as Western University. In subsequent references, simply ‘Western’ or the University, with a capital U is acceptable.

When referring to Western University and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the following is acceptable: Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University.

Robarts Research Institute

In writing, upon first reference the full name ‘Robarts Research Institute, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University’ must be used. In subsequent references, the use of ‘Robarts’ is an acceptable short form.  It must never be referred to as ‘the Robarts’.
