Homecoming 2013

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Homecoming weekend offers everyone an opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni and celebrate the proud history of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Western University. This year's weekend-long celebration will feature a number of special honours for alumni through the alumni of distinction awards and a medical match up on the gridiron.

Dr. Kenneth H. Wright and Dr. Jim Jean, DDS'73 are the 2013 recipients of the Schulich Dentistry Alumni of Distinction Awards.

Dr. Kenneth H. Wright will receive the Honorary Alumni of Distinction Award. A much loved professor, Dr. Wright has been described as "a highly regarded periodontist, a popular and inspring teacher, a man of enormous consciousness and sense of personal responsibility, and a creative and resourceful innovator." Amongst his many accomplishments, Dr. Wright created the Dental Outreach Community Services (DOCS), a program which for five years has been providing free dental care to people in the City of London who are less fortunate and don't have access to dental insurance.

Dr. Jim Jean, DDS'73, will receive the Alumni of Distinction Award. In addition to maintaining his own practice, Dr. Jean has dedicated nearly 40 years to teaching students at Schulich Dentistry. Most recently he became one of a handful of individuals who provided mentoring to third and fourth year students. With a bachelor of education under his belt, Dr. Jean's unique skills have made an incredible difference in the educational journey of students. He is being recognized for his longtime commitment to the profession of dentistry and the mission of Schulich Dentistry.

They will be presented their awards at the Dentistry Alumni Awards Reception on Friday, September 27 at the London Hunt and Country Club. The Dean's Gala, scheduled for September 28, will feature the awarding of Schulich Medicine Alumni of Distinction Awards, and will once again give colleagues the opportunity to honour Drs. Wright and Jean. More details on the Schulich Medicine award recipients will be shared in the coming weeks.

Gridiron Match Up

What would Homecoming weekend be without the annual football game? This year, the tension is building and the line of scrimmage has been drawn between Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and Queen's University School of Medicine, as the Western Mustangs take on the Queen's Golden Gaels on Saturday afternoon. A battle of epic proportions is brewing as Dr. Michael J. Strong, Dean, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry has challenged Dr. Richard Reznick, Dean, Queen's School of Medicine to a friendly bet over the outcome of this year's 2013 Homecoming football game.

The stakes are high: The Dean of the losing team's medical school must travel to enemy territory and present a lecture.

Other activities will take place around this event. The students of each medical school will have the opportunity to vote on the lecture topic given by the Dean of the losing team. It is definitely a game to attend.

Along with the football game, there are a number of events happening around campus for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry alumni, including the Sport Medicine Symposium, Dentistry Symposium, the Continuing Medical Education Program and the Meds & Dents Open House.
