To Year 1

The Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) Program is a "second-entry" program.  Students are not admitted directly into the BMSc Program in Year 1 - they will apply for admission to the BMSc Program when entering Year 3.  Students interested in the BMSc Program (i.e. in the modules leading to BMSc degrees) will usually register in Medical Sciences First Entry in the Faculty of Science in Years 1 and 2.  There are ~ 500 spaces in Year 3 of the BMSc Program and it is anticipated that not all of these spaces will be filled by students admitted to Medical Sciences First Entry. Based on our experience with admission to Year 3 BMSc for the past several years, we are confident that there will be several spaces available for students admitted to Western via other programs, such as Science. These students will form the "competitive pool" of applicants for Year 3 BMSc.  Once admitted to Year 3 of the BMSc Program, students are registered in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry as their "home faculty".

Medical Sciences First Entry

Approximately 750 students will be admitted to Medical Sciences First Entry in the Faculty of Science and will register in Medical Sciences 1 in first year and Medical Sciences 2 in second year.  Provided certain conditions are satisfied, students in Medical Sciences 2 will be assured admission to Year 3 of the BMSc Program.  Students in Medical Sciences 1 and/or 2 who do not satisfy the conditions for assured admission to Year 3 BMSc can still apply for admission to Year 3 BMSc as part of the "competitive pool" of students.  See Admission to the BMSc Program for more details.

Courses: The courses to taken in Medical Sciences 1 can be found under "Year 1 Course Selection" on the Course Selection page. Course selection in Year 1 is very similar for all students in Medical Sciences 1.  There are a few modules in the BMSc Program, however, that require specific first-year math and physics courses.

Competitive Pool

Students admitted to Western via programs other than Medical Sciences First Entry (such as Science), as well as students in Medical Sciences 1 and/or 2 who fall short of the conditions required for assured admission to Year 3 BMSc, will form the "competitive pool" of students who can apply for the remaining spaces in Year 3 BMSc.  These students must complete the first-year (1000-level) courses listed in the Admission Requirements in the Academic Calendar for the modules to which they wish to apply in Year 3 BMSc.  Students in the competitive pool will usually register in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Year 2 and take the second-year (2000-level) courses listed in the Admission Requirements in the Academic Calendar.  These students will submit an Intent to Register (an internal application) for the module/degree they wish to enter in Year 3 and will be assessed at the end of Year 2.

High School Students with IB and AP

IB and AP students must satisfy certain conditions to be admitted to Western and receive transfer credit.  See the information under Applicant Types for basic information about applying with IB or AP courses.  Questions about admission to Western from an IB or AP program should be directed to the Admissions Office.

Receiving transfer credits can be challenging when choosing courses for Medical Sciences First Entry at Western. The following tips/resources should help prepare students for their course selection. View the Admission with IB and AP credits page for more information.

Summer Academic Orientation (SAO)

late June - end of July

Summer Academic Orientation (SAO) enables first-year students to get connected, learn more about Western, explore our campus and meet members of our community before they begin school in September. SAO participants have the opportunity to:

Students should register for a SAO session.  Registration opens on June 3.  See Summer Academic Orientation for more details.

The BMSUE Office encourages all students admitted to Medical Sciences First Entry to register for their courses as soon as they are able to do so, even before their SAO session. First year students will randomly be assigned an appointment time on June 11th beginning at 7:00 am and will run each half hour until 6:30 pm.

Common Questions about Admissions

I didn't receive an offer of admission to Medical Sciences but I want to get into the BMSc Program -- should I accept an offer of admission to Science?

Yes, accept the offer of admission to Science and Biological Sciences.  You can apply to Year 3 BMSc via the competitive pool of students.  See Admission to the BMSc Program more details.

Will I receive a later offer of admission to Medical Sciences if I achieve a higher final average (end of term)?

No, it is very unlikely that a later offer of admission will be extended, even if your final average is higher than your mid-year average.  The ~ 750 spaces in Medical Sciences will likely be filled with students who have already received offers of admission.  Hopefully, you have received (and will accept) an offer of admission to Science (or another program at Western).  You can apply to Year 3 BMSc even if you aren't admitted to Medical Sciences First Entry, via the competitive pool of students.  See Admission to the BMSc Program for more details.

Is there someone I can contact about my offer of admission (or lack, thereof)?

The central Admissions Office admits students to first year at Western (Medical Sciences, Science, etc.).  You can contact the Admissions Office by email.  The following individuals/offices are not responsible for admitting students to Western and we ask that you do not contact them: the Dean of Science, the Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the BMSUE Office, and the Academic Counselling Team (Science/Basic Medical Sciences).
