Tuesday, December 18, 2012

It is with great sadness that the family of Phil Hayman announces his ever-reluctant but peaceful death at home on December 15, 2012.

Dr. Hayman completed medical school at Western University, followed by residency positions at Victoria Hospital, Sunnybrook Hospital , the Hospital for Sick Children, and the Toronto General Hospital. He subsequently completed clinical fellowships in Urology at the Toronto General Hospital, the Bowman Gray School of Medicine (North Carolina), and the Stanford University School of Medicine (California).

Dr. Hayman was first appointed to the Department of Surgery in 1973. He was a dedicated physician known for his kindness, compassion, excellence in patient care, and superb teaching skills. He was a regular participant on Division, Department, and Hospital committees. He served as Chair of the Section on Dialysis and Renal Transplantation for the Ontario Medical Association from 1979 to 1981 and of the Section on Urology for the OMA from 1988 to 1990.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the London Hunt Club, Devil's Glen Ski Club, Parkwood Hospital, the St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation, and the Boys' and Girls' Club of London. He also loved the arts, most particularly opera, music and theatre, and specifically the Stratford Festival which he attended with great enthusiasm since its first season in 1953. Dr. Hayman is survived by his wife, Dr. M.L. Myers and two children. Donations in his memory could be made to the Stratford Festival and would be greatly appreciated.

He will be greatly missed by everyone in the Division of Urology and the Department of Surgery. Our sincere condolences to Dr. Myers and their families on this enormous loss.
