Paterson Lecture 2021

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine hosted the 2021 Paterson Lecture on Thursday, December 2, 2021. Our guest this year, Dr. Lewis Cantley, is the Margaret and Herman Sokol Professor and Director of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell. Dr. Cantley’s research has significantly impacted the broad field of cell signaling and has revolutionized how we think about targeting cancers. Among his many notable contributions is the discovery and careful molecular characterization of the PI-3-kinase pathway in controlling cell growth and metabolism.

As done in previous years, in the spirit of this Lectureship, Dr. Cantley met with our trainees to discuss the scientific journey, and his experiences and approach. This meeting was followed by the well-attended Paterson Lecture, with over 120 participants from various departments and faculties at Western. Dr. Cantley showcased a new tool his laboratory has developed to predict which protein kinases may be altered in any specific cancer. This platform significantly cuts down the time to target discovery. It was an inspirational Lecture. We are very thankful to Dr Cantley for sharing his wonderful work.

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine’s Paterson Lecture is organized by a team of very talented individuals, including Angela DeCandido, Kathilyn Allewell, Cheryl Campbell, Tracey Koning, and Nan Meng.
