As the calendar year comes to a close, the members of the PaLM Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group would like to provide an update on their progress.

In its first year, the EDI Working Group met quarterly to discuss how to best to support the PaLM community.

To this end, a webpage with resources was created and:

  • we welcomed new members Dr. Sarah Aziz (PGY4), Dr. Mark Darling and Linda Wang (MSc Candidate);
  • we met with Dr. Opiyo Oloya, Western’s Associate Vice-President of EDI to discuss the Western Equity Census;
  • the first cohort of 11 departmental members completed San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training.

As a group, we also discussed initiatives for the upcoming year, including but not limited to:

  • inviting seminar speakers on EDI-related topics;
  • developing recommendations on how to apply an EDI lens to our selection committee processes at all levels;
  • sharing and interpreting the results of the Western Equity Census and developing a departmental action plan.

We engaged in meaningful dialogue in the spirit of openness and inclusivity and invite new members to join us at any time.

If you wish to discuss a matter related to EDI or have suggestions for our group, please reach out to our leader and EDI Ambassador, Dr. Rebekah Jacques (rebekah.jacques@lhsc.on.ca).
