On May 4, 2015 the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine held an official opening ceremony of the new Transplant Immunology Laboratory at University Hospital.  Dr. QingYong Xu, the newly recruited director for the Transplant Immunology Laboratory was introduced and he led the tour of the new facilities.

The first transplant laboratory at University Hospital opened in the mid-1970s and was a very small, employing four technologists with approximately 10-15 people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Volumes have changed significantly in the past 40 years.  The Transplant Immunology Laboratory now has 9 full time medical laboratory technicians and there are 80-90 patients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.  Testing is also done for bone marrow, heart, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.

The Transplant Immunology Laboratory received international recognition for playing a key role in the testing and evaluation for Cyclosporine treatment.  This work improved the 5-year graph survival rate from 50-90%.
