Dr. Sunita Venkateswaran

Dr. Sunita Venkateswaran is a pediatric neurologist and associate professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Western University. She joined the Division of Neurology and Clinical Neurological Sciences at the Children’s Hospital in 2022 and serves as an Associate Scientist at the Child Health Research Institute.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Venkateswaran was a staff pediatric neurologist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the University of Ottawa from 2010 to 2022. She completed fellowship training in demyelinating diseases at the Montreal Neurological Institute and the Hospital for Sick Children.
At Children’s Hospital, Dr. Venkateswaran collaborates closely with the metabolics and genetics divisions, providing care for patients with neurometabolic and neurogenetic conditions. Her clinical and research expertise centers on rare neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders. She co-leads the Southwestern Ontario Rare Disease (SWORD) initiative, a multidisciplinary program dedicated to improving care for children with rare diseases.
Dr. Venkateswaran is actively involved in several national and international research collaborations focused on leukodystrophies, movement disorders, pediatric multiple sclerosis, and neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). She leads international research efforts on fatty acid hydroxylase-associated neurodegeneration (FAHN/SPG35), a form of NBIA and leukodystrophy. She also provides care for young adult patients with undiagnosed white matter disorders through her involvement with the White Matter Rounds Initiative and CARELeuko, both Canadian-led networks.
In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr. Venkateswaran has co-led multiple educational initiatives in Canadian pediatric neurology, including the development of the national in-training examination for pediatric neurology residents (NITECaP). She currently serves as the President of the Canadian Association of Child Neurology.
