Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, in which many significant physical, psychological, social, and cognitive changes take place.

Adolescent medicine is a subspecialty that cares for the health needs of adolescent patients in the context of major events that define this developmental life stage, providing a confidential, non-judgmental, comprehensive, inclusive, and safe space for all patients in our community.

Our team works with other departments to provide care for issues such as:

• Support for patients with chronic illnesses transitioning from paediatric to adult care, coping with chronic illness, and adhering to treatment
• Substance use
• Sexual health and contraception
• Mild to moderate mood and anxiety disorders in the context of other adolescent health issues
• Eating disorders, as part of the LHSC Eating Disorder Program
• Gender affirming care, as part of the Gender Pathways Services
