Dr. Speechley received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 and Master of Arts degree in 1981 in Sociology at The University of Western Ontario. She obtained her PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at The University of Western Ontario in 1987 and then spent two years as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University. Dr. Speechley, Professor, Departments of Paediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics, was appointed at Western in 1989.

Research Interests
Dr. Speechley’s two main research interests are quality of life in children with chronic illnesses and their families and social determinants of child health.

Research Activities
Dr. Speechley completed a multi-centre study following children newly diagnosed with epilepsy for two years to document the course and determinants of their quality of life. She is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to conduct a long-term follow-up of these children through adolescence and young adulthood. She continues to collaborate with colleagues on several studies assessing social determinants of health in children.
