Dr. Demirkaya, received his medical degree and pediatrics and rheumatology certification from the Turkey. He also completed a Master of Science program on Autoinflammatory Diseases. Continuing to expand his research base internationally, he was awarded one-year training bursary in 2010 by the European League Against Rheumatism for a Clinical Fellowship in the Department of Pediatric Rheumatology and Pediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization (PRINTO) at the University of Genova, Italy. He was granted a bursary for the Research Program for International Researchers then accepted by the Autoinflammatory DIsease Section, National Institute of Health (NIH), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), Bethesda, USA in 2013 as special scientist. He has been holding various international positions, some of which are at National Institutes of Health as a senior scientist (2014-present), at George Washington University Joint Myositis Clinic in the USA and at Paediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization (PRINTO), Genova University in Italy.

Dr. Demirkaya joined the Department of Paediatrics and Division of Paediatric Rheumatology at the Children's Hospital and Western in 2017. Dr. Demirkaya is a Scientist at the Child Health Research Institute, Associate Scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute and a Professor at Western University. His research interests include autoinflammatory diseases (FMF, HIDS, TRAPS, CINCA/NOMID PFAPA, and Behcet) and their genetic background, vasculitis and outcome in rheumatic diseases in children. Dr. Demirkaya currently serve as a secretary of International Society of Systemic Autoinflammatory Diseases (ISSAID).

His translational biology research program in autoinflammation, which includes multinational-multidisciplinary collaborative projects, is focused on investigating the mechanisms, genetic and pathobiology of autoinflammatory diseases, development and progression to identify new therapeutic targets. He is also working on the impact of ethnic, environmental and genetic factors on the disease presentation. He recently joined the Robarts institute as an associate scientist and set up research laboratory at the same institute. Dr. Demirkaya has been extremely prolific in his research productivity, having published 114 articles in international, peer-reviewed journals and 28 book chapters, as well as 106 articles included in conference proceedings. His work has been cited already more than 3100 times. These articles have consistently been featured in some of the best journals in the field, including Nature Genetics, Annals of the Rheumatic Disease, Arthritis Rheumatology and PNAS.
