Black applicant pathway
Our commitment to helping mitigate historical and structural challenges
The Black Applicant Pathway (BAP) was established in recognition of the damage caused by years of racism and systemic bias against Black people that has resulted in significant underrepresentation in institutions of higher learning. It is hoped that the BAP will be one way of reducing challenges faced by Black applicants to medical school.
To ensure a holistic assessment valuing the intersectionality that may occur for a single individual, applications through this pathway are assessed by a diversity and equity panel enriched with physicians, community members, and/or medical students who self-identify as Black and are trained in implicit bias and EDID practices.
Only in exceptional circumstances will Black applicants with a GPA of less than 3.30 or MCAT scores below 125 be considered through this pathway.
Applying through this pathway does not guarantee the granting of GPA or MCAT flexibility, nor an offer of admission.
There are no fixed seats or quotas for this pathway.
Admission interviews are structured, standardized and conducted virtually by 3-person panels that may include physicians, community members, and medical students.
For applicants through this pathway, the School endeavors to assemble interview panels comprised of individuals who self-identify as Black.

Western Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

Schulich Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDI-D)
Schulich EDI-D serves to support, engage and empower the Schulich community with guidance and resources to create an equitable and inclusive space for all, and seeks to embed principles of equity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression and decolonization in everything we do to meet the needs of the communities we belong to and serve.
The Schulich Office of EDI-D aims to earn allyship by listening, learning and supporting collaborative responses to the pressing health needs of our region and beyond.
Schulich Learner Experience Office (LEO)
LEO strives to provide a supportive learning environment for students enrolled in the MD, DDS and Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education programs. Support comes in many forms, depending on the needs of the learner.
A broad network of faculty, campus and community colleagues assist in providing additional resources to help learners at all points in their journey, such as:
- personal counselling and/or referral to campus and community professionals,
- academic support and accommodations,
- career guidance and support services to encourage and enhance success,
- support related to equity and mistreatment concerns within educational, work, and research activities, and
- workshops.
