Background

Part of the Masters of Management of Applied Science (MMASc) program, the Global Health Systems MMASc spoke started in 2015, under the leadership of Dr, Irena Creed and the Africa Institute at Western University.

From the outset the Global Health Systems spoke was designed to help students with a BSc to bridge the gap between their science background, and the business and communications skills required to succeed in the private and public sectors, along with non-governmental organizations.

Core hub courses in business, management and leadership offerred in partnership by the Department of English & Writing Studes and the Department of Management & Organizational Studies have led to the success of the innovative curriculum offered by the program.

In the summer of 2017, Dr. Eric Arts assumed the Directorship of the Global Health Systems MMASc, and the spoke and transitioned from Faculty of Science to a joint partnership between Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Consequently, starting in 2019-20 academic year, students have the opportunity to take Spoke courses in Global Health from both Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculty of Health Sciences, broadening their exposure to different theoretical and empirical approaches to the subject of health equity and inequities, differential health care needs, and health-care delivery related to impoverished populations around the world.
