Academic year kicks off with renewed curriculum

Colleagues,

Please accept my warmest of welcomes to the 2019-2020 academic year. I hope you found some well-deserved time to relax and recharge during the summer months.

This September marks the official launch of the renewed curriculum. This transition, spanning both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, positions Schulich Medicine learners on the leading edge of what is really a world-wide evolution in medical education.

The design focuses on the development of adaptive learning while adding emphasis on the needs of the communities we serve and the medical complexities that residents of Southwestern Ontario live with. It is ambitious in scope but certainly necessary.

This year, the first-year class begins studies completely in this framework. Clerkship is also beginning to transition assessments toward a competency-based lens.

As with any type of major change, we expect challenges. Despite hard work and planning, there may be areas where the delivery falls short of the objectives. Ongoing reflection of both the successes and lapses will need to be collected and fed forward so that the design of this curriculum adapts as well.

This curriculum has a need for more faculty to be involved at earlier stages than ever before and you have been incredible at rising up to the task. Many of you have registered to be involved in small group discussions, academic coaching and longitudinal clinics. Others have taken on course leadership and course design positions. For this to be a sustainable change, I am hoping that more of you will also find a small part to contribute to as well. We need you.

Finally, please know that I am always looking to improve the ways the School supports your Continuing Medicial Education and Continuing Professional Development interests. Please let me know what you are looking for so we can target this and support your ongoing professional growth.

As always, thank you for your hard work and dedication.
