We are celebrating the achievements of our talented faculty, staff and students. Congratulations to Joan Binnendyk, Dr. Jeff Dixon, Daniel Hardy, PhD, Dr. Stewart Harris, Dr. Peter Williamson, Dr. John Denstedt, Patrick O’Donoghue, PhD, Dr. Robert Petrella, the Dental Outreach Community Services program, Anusha Ratneswaran, PhD(C), and the award recipients at Dentistry Research Day 2014.

At the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE), Joan Binnendyk's presentation CanMEDS in Context: Engaging Residents in a Transition to Residency Program, received the award for Best "What Works" paper. There were over 100 "What Works" entries. Binnendyk's presentation reflects two years of work on a creative and effective Transition to Residency program that was introduced in 2013

Dr. Jeff Dixon, a professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and Schulich Dentistry, was featured in two publications about the future of oral health care research in Canada. Congratulations to Daniel Hardy, PhD, who received the Children’s Health Research Institute 2014 Scientist of the Year Award. Dr. Hardy was recognized on September 24 when he presented "Postnatal catch-up growth and the Metabolic Syndrome: Elucidating the underlying mechanisms".

Congratulations to Dr. Stewart Harris who has been reappointed to the position of Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) Chair in Diabetes Management, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. Read more about Dr. Harris and his accomplishments here

In recognition of Dr. John Denstedt’s support and contribution to Chinese urology, he has been named as an Honorary Member of Chinese Urological Association (CUA).

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry Assistant Professor Patrick O’Donoghue, PhD, is Western University’s newest Canada Research Chair in Chemical Biology. The announcement was made by the Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science & Technology) as part of a $118 million investment aimed at supporting top-tier talent at Canadian post-secondary institutions. Congratulations to Dr. Robert Petrella who received a grant from the Movember Foundation for its Men's Health & Wellbeing Innovation Challenge for his project "Hockey Fans In Training: Hockey FIT". A total of 15 projects across Canada have been awarded funding. Read more about the Movember Foundation and the grant here

Congratulations to Schulich Dentistry’s Dental Outreach Community Services (DOCS) program for receiving the 2014 Partnered Community Hero Award from the Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre. DOCS was recognized for the program’s commitment to building healthy, happy, vibrant and welcoming communities in London, Ontario. Dr. Les Kalman, the program’s director, accepted the award.

Congratulations to Anusha Ratneswaran, PhD(C). She is one of this year’s recipients of a prestigious Collaborative Scholarship from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International. She is one of only six recipients of this award worldwide. Read more about her achievement here

Greg Luvison, DDS 2017, awarded for poster: “Bioactive, fast-setting and injectable bone cements for craniofacial reconstruction.” Supervised by Drs. Amin Rizkalla and Jeff Dixon. CDA/Dentsply Travel Award - will represent Schulich Dentistry in the Student Clinician competition at the 2015 CDA National Oral Health Conference.

Vida Lam, DDS 2017, awarded for poster: “Role of bone sialoprotein in stabilizing tendon insertion into bone.” Supervised by Dr. Harvey Goldberg. ADA Foundation Travel Award - will represent Schulich Dentistry at the 2015 Dental Student Research Conference in Maryland.

Kimberly Williams, DDS 2017, awarded for poster: “Diphenyleneiodonium inhibits TGF-induced expression in gingival fibroblasts.” Supervised by Dr. Andrew Leask. Hinman Student Research Travel Award - will represent Schulich Dentistry at the 2015 Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis, Tennessee.

1st - Erik Holm, DCS/DDS 2018 - Dr. Harvey Goldberg Lab, awarded for poster: “Osteopontin mediates mineralization and not osteogenic cell development in vitro.”
2nd - Carine Bourassa, Graduate Orthodontics 2015 - Dr. Ali Tassi Lab, awarded for poster: “An in-vitro comparison of different palatal sites for orthodontic miniscrew insertion: the effect of bone quality and quantity on primary stability.”
3rd - Shawna Kim, DCS Student - Dr. Douglas Hamilton Lab, awarded for poster: “Effect of nifedipine and phenytoin on gingival tissue remodelling.”
