New Faculty Lecture Series - introducing new faces and research

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

It is a chance for faculty, staff and students to learn about the work of their newest colleagues. Hosted by the Research Office, the New Faculty Lecture Series began in September and provides an opportunity on the first Friday of every month for a new faculty member to profile their work in a one-hour lunch time lecture.

It was an idea that originally came from the Chairs of the Basic Sciences Departments who saw a need to better introduce new faculty to their colleagues. They felt that it was important to ensure that the community at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry understood what these new scientists and researchers bring to the School in terms of expertise, and to give them the opportunity to share their interests related to collaboration.

"We thought that a lecture series was a wonderful idea," said Dr. Denise Figlewicz, vice-dean of Research and Innovation. "The Research Office has gladly embraced the opportunity to help this come to life."

Dr. Patrick O'Donoghue from the Department of Biochemistry began his work at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in September. He will be presenting his work as part of the lecture series on December 6.

The Research Office hopes this is just the beginning of a long-standing tradition.

"I believe it will bring tremendous value; any audience member can envision new lines of experiments they might carry out in collaboration with the new faculty member," said Dr. Figlewicz. "I expect we will continue the series so long as we are recruiting new faculty."
