Graduate Training

CERI is a robust and growing hub for graduate training in health professions education. In 2020, our team of scientists supervised 29 Masters students, 9 PhD students, and 2 postdoctoral fellows.

The centrepiece of our graduate training endeavours is the MHPE-Canada program. This international Master of Health Professions Education program represents a collaboration with  Maastricht University’s internationally recognized School of Health Professions Education in the Netherlands and with the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). The degree is conferred from Maastricht University, but core curriculum and research thesis supervision are delivered, in part, from CERI and CHES. This approach affords students opportunities to learn from some of the leading international voices in the field, while building capacity in the realm of education scholarship at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. In 2020, we had a record number of applicants for the 2021 iteration of this program.

Our scientists also supervise in a range of other programs; these include Schulich Medicine & Dentistry programs such as the Master of Clinical Science in Family Medicine and the Master of Science in Surgery, Western programs such as the PhD programs in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and in Education, and a range of Canadian and international graduate programs.

Supporting Colleagues and Learners

In addition to formal graduate training, CERI scientists have mentored or supervised dozens of projects led by medical students, residents, educationalist staff, and faculty colleagues. Furthermore, our research consultants, Drs. Jacqueline Torti and Rachael Pack, have engaged in dozens of research consultations, brainstorming projects and shaping ideas that ultimately become innovations, presentations, successful grant applications, and publications.

CERI has also begun forging new collaborations to build capacity in education research across Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. For example, in 2020 we facilitated workshops on getting started in education research for faculty in Windsor, in Basic Sciences, and in Dentistry.
