CERI contributed in several other ways to the educational mission and the academic life of Schulich in 2020.

Some 2020 highlights:

Dr. Taryn Taylor designed and led four inter-disciplinary and inter-professional in situ simulation sessions focused on improving COVID-related care processes, enhancing collaboration, and identifying latent safety threats. The debriefing report she created was adapted by other departments (e.g. CCTC, Anesthesia) to enhance the knowledge translation capacity of their own in situ simulation sessions.

Dr. Chris Watling co-designed and delivered a six-workshop course on coaching clinical learners, including a mid-course pivot to online format. This series of workshops reflects an ongoing effort to translate empiric work on feedback and coaching to practical training for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry faculty.

Dr. Mark Goldszmidt re-designed the Introduction to Communication course for first year medical students at Schulich, then taught this course starting September 2020.

And our scientists have been increasingly visible in various media.

For example:

Dr. Taryn Taylor discussed her in situ simulation in a CTV interview segment entitled “Giving birth during a pandemic, the fears and the unknown”.

Dr. Javeed Sukhera did several radio interviews and call-in segments related to bias, stigma, and coping with the pandemic.

Dr. Chris Watling co-created and co-hosts a new podcast, The Huddle, dedicated to exploring coaching as an educational strategy, both within and outside of medicine.

Dr. Sayra Cristancho created and hosts two new podcasts: The Curiosity Habit, which features stories of researchers in medical education from what drives their research interest to some of the challenges and failures they encountered, and Research in 90 sec., which highlights the “so what” of research in short (~200 words), accessible and engaging narratives.
