Basmah El Aloul

El Aloul

Program: Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences, Minor in Pharmacology

Year:  4

Hometown: London, ON

My favourite thing about Western: Even though Western is big school, it’s an incredibly close-knit community and campus truly feels like a second home! There are so many opportunities for students to get involved outside of the classroom and meet new people! Whether it’s through student government, clubs, athletics, research, and the list goes on; there is a place for everyone in Western’s community!

Why I chose the BMSc Program: I chose the BMSc Program, and in particular an Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences, because it provides students with the opportunity to study the human body through the lens of a variety of different disciplines, such as physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy, to name a few.

My campus/community involvement: I am currently involved with the Science Students’ Council (SSC) as the Vice-President Academic, and I have previously been involved with SSC as the Charity Commissioner. One of my favorite experiences at Western to date was being a part of the University Students’ Council Charity Orientation Committee to organize the Terry Fox Run and Shinerama campaign for Western’s Orientation Week. Currently, I work in a research laboratory in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology, and have worked in a local pharmacy in past years. Some of my favourite places to volunteer in the community are the Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario and the Child Life program at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.

The best place to study on campus: Physics & Astronomy Building

My favourite class: Cardiovascular Pharmacology (Pharmacology 4320A)

Best place to eat on campus: The Spoke (for its nachos!)

Best way to meet other BMSc students: Getting involved with student groups such as the Science Students’ Council, Science Soph Team, Basic Medical Sciences Association (BMSA), etc.

Three words to describe being a BMSc student at Western: Rewarding, multifaceted, phenomenal

What I to be when I grow up: I hope to pursue graduate studies in the field of epidemiology or attend medical school.
