Announcement: Welcome Dr. Kabir Khan, Assistant Professor

Dr. Kabir KhanDr. Kabir Khan will be joining the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology this September as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Khan obtained his PhD from the University of Birmingham. As a member of Dr. Roy Bicknell’s group, his doctoral research focused on molecular angiogenesis. More specifically, he discovered novel and targetable protein interactions between endothelial cells, pericytes and the extracellular matrix in tumors. Dr. Khan subsequently joined Dr. Robert Kerbel’s laboratory at the Sunnybrook Research Institute for his postdoctoral fellowship, where he was awarded a prestigious Banting postdoctoral fellowship. His postdoctoral work focused on building new preclinical models to study metastasis and response to immunotherapy, with an emphasis on acquired resistance to PD-1/PD-L1 antibody blockade. Notably, Dr. Khan has published in a wide range of high-profile journals, including Cancer Research, Science Immunology and Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology. More recently he has been working with a biotech start-up company that is focused on de-risking antibody drug discovery and identifying off-target binding.

Dr. Khan plans to establish a lab drawing on his expertise spanning tumor immunology, structural biology, protein engineering, and vascular biology. His research group will seek to identify novel and druggable mechanisms that tumors exploit to evade immune destruction.
