Diseases of the GI Tract 2024
Ménétrier Disease: Unraveling the Mystery of a One-in-a-Million Condition - Team 12
Media Type: Infographic
Summary
We chose to discuss Menetrier disease which impacts the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The disease is characterized by reduced stomach acid production, enlarged stomach folds, protein loss, and thickened mucosal lining. We chose to display the information using an infographic because we decided that it would best illustrate all the different components related to the disease (ie. diagnosis, symptoms, causes, etc.) in an easy-to-digest manner. We selected this disease because it relates to many topics discussed in class such as hypertrophy (increase in cell size), hyperplasia (increase in cell number), the anatomy and functions of the GI tract, and diagnosis techniques. The infographic’s goal is to increase public knowledge and awareness of Menetrier Disease. Since it is more rare compared to other GI diseases, many people lack an idea of what the disease pertains to.

Colorectal Operation: Figure out the mystery colon pathology - Team 19
Media Type: Interactive Game
Summary
The assignment focuses on colon pathologies, which are diseases and conditions affecting the large intestine. These include conditions like Colorectal Adenocarcinoma, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Diverticular Disease. Presented as an interactive game, learners step into the role of a proctologist, a doctor specializing in the colon, rectum, and anus, at the London Regional Health Centre. The game involves diagnosing a virtual patient named Joe Patterson based on medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic test results. We chose colon pathologies because understanding these conditions is crucial for early detection and treatment, potentially saving lives. The interactive, game-based format was selected to transform what can often be seen as complex and difficult-to-understand medical information into something engaging, memorable, and accessible to everyone. Colon health is a critical aspect of overall well being, yet discussions around conditions like colorectal cancer or Crohn's disease can be often overlooked. By demystifying these conditions through an interactive experience, we hope to increase awareness, encourage proactive health measures, and destigmatize discussions around colon health. Players learn about the anatomy of the large intestine, symptoms of various pathologies, the significance of diagnostic tools (like colonoscopy), and the importance of differential diagnosis. The game concludes with the correct diagnosis of Joe's condition and offers insight into treatment options and preventative measures against colon diseases.
