Naturalistic Movie Task

The task (~9 mins total) comprises a block, which is divided into an encoding phase (~4 mins total) and a recognition phase (~4 mins total). During the encoding phase, the participants will be presented with a short 8 minute movie consisting of ten non-consecutive clips cut from “Bang! You’re Dead”, a 1961 episode of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” After a brief one minute break, the participants will be presented with a “Yes/No” recognition task in which five random familiar clips and five unfamiliar 5-sec clips will be played from the same episode. The familiar and unfamiliar clips will be presented in random order, and the participants will be instructed to press “y” (Yes) if they recognise the clip from the familiar set or “n” (No) if they don't. The completion of the recognition phase marks the end of the block. After a two minute break, the participants may choose to repeat the recognition phase, for a maximum of three blocks, or terminate the task up to their convenience. For each repeated block, a novel set of unfamiliar clips will be displayed to maintain unfamiliarity across the study. This task should ideally run within the first few days of iEEG recording, when epileptiform activity is minimal.
Dr. Mohamad Kesserwan (neurosurgery resident) and Aishwarya Pathak (doctoral student) are administering this task.
