About Us
The Western Epilepsy Research Group (WERG) builds on a rich history of innovation and excellence in epilepsy care and research. Our origins trace back to the 1970s, when Dr. Warren Blume, a neurologist and epileptologist, and Dr. John Girvin, a neurosurgeon and neurophysiologist, established one of Canada’s pioneering epilepsy programs. Their efforts led to the first epilepsy surgery in 1974 and the formal creation of the Epilepsy Program in 1977, supported by Western University and key community partners.
Since then, the program has grown significantly, including the development of Canada’s largest Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and has trained numerous specialists who continue to make impactful contributions worldwide. Dr. Blume, a visionary in epileptology and electroencephalography, was instrumental in shaping the field and was recognized with honors such as the Order of Canada.
Today, WERG continues this legacy, driving advancements in epilepsy research and care. Our multidisciplinary focus spans neuroimaging, electrophysiology, genetics, and social and community research, aiming to deepen our understanding of epilepsy, refine diagnostic tools, and develop innovative therapies. Committed to translating research into real-world solutions, we strive to improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by epilepsy.
