OBGYN Competence Committee

The Competence Committee (CC) is an independent sub-committee of the Residency Program Committee (RPC) responsible for assessing resident progress within the framework of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). The Committee ensures that residents are meeting the standards of training established by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and supports the Department’s educational mission in developing competent, independent practitioners.

The Competence Committee Roles & Functions:

  • Reviews each resident’s achievement of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and milestones to determine progression through each stage of training.
  • Identifies residents requiring additional support and recommends appropriate learning, formal enhanced learning plans, remediation, or probation plans in collaboration with the PGME Office.
  • Makes decisions regarding promotion, readiness for certification exams, and transition to independent practice.
  • Uses a comprehensive review process that integrates multiple data sources, including EPA and milestone assessments, clinical feedback, and Academic Advisor recommendations.
  • Upholds principles of confidentiality, fairness, and transparency, including declaring and managing conflicts of interest.
  • Remains current with evolving CBME best practices and reviews its mandate and performance annually.
