On Call Duties

Two trainees are “on-call” from home every night, one at University Hospital and one at Victoria Hospital. While on call, the residents are responsible for acute consultations, unstable dialysis patients, and admission and management of renal transplant patients. The Nephrology trainee acts as first-call for Consultative Service and the Emergency Room, and second call for the nephrology ward at Victoria Hospital (the junior internal medicine resident is on first call for the ward). At University Hospital, there is no Nephrology ward and dialysis patients are admitted under the Internal Medicine Team, with the Nephrology trainee being available for consultation. Renal Transplant patients, however get admitted directly to the Transplant Unit and are under the care of the Nephrology Team, with the Nephrology trainee as first call. The Nephrology trainee functions under the supervision of a Renal transplant fellow. and/or the Consultant Nephrologist. On weekends, the Nephrology trainees and staff round and work together to provide service to the dialysis patients, consult service and in-patient service.
