The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University is seeking applications for the position of Vice-Dean, Basic Medical Sciences, to be effective March 1, 2013 or sooner should the candidate prefer.

The Vice-Dean, Basic Medical Sciences will be expected to strive for excellence in all aspects of Basic Medical Sciences within Schulich. This person will be responsible for ensuring that the mission of each Basic Medical Sciences program is achieved by providing effective academic direction and to ensure linkages are built across these programs to support the overall Basic Medical Sciences mission of the School and of the wider University. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring all Basic Medical Science standards governing Program Accreditation (undergraduate and graduate), strategic planning, program planning/expansion and evaluation are met. Oversight of internal and external relations and student and faculty support activities are also prominent components of the role. She/he will be a resource for the integrated delivery of the academic activities of the Basic Medical Sciences programs to ensure stability, consistency and efficiency in the Basic Medical Sciences enterprise. The Vice Dean, Basic Medical Sciences shall effectively direct Basic Medical Sciences' available resources, personnel and technology to ensure programs are properly prepared, aligned and focused to optimize the Basic Medical Sciences experience of all students, undergraduate and graduate alike. The successful incumbent will participate in committees such as the Senior Leadership Council and ECSC/FC and sit as a member of the Committee of Basic Science Chairs.

Candidates for the Vice-Dean, Basic Medical Sciences position will have a superior knowledge of basic science research and education. He/she is expected to have a record of experience in senior academic leadership roles, for example, but not limited to program director, departmental Chair or member of a Decanal team. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to negotiate, collaborate, communicate, and facilitate in complex environments. Established leadership and team building capacities and a track record of sustained commitment are expected.

The successful candidate must already hold a full-time academic appointment at Western, and must be able to commit to a minimum 0.8 Full Time Equivalent time allocation for a 5 year term, with the possibility of renewal for one term.
