Welcome! Our Resident's Research Day is an annual event that boasts presentations containing the most current research that our Department has to offer. These presentations are given by our residents, and additionally, this event is attended by two prestigious guest speakers who share their knowledge with us via specially chosen lecture topics. Please read below for more information! 

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Continuing Professional Development, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. You may claim a maximum of 4.5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

DISTINGUISHED VISITING PROFESSOR - Dr. Yi-Chun Carol Liu, MD, MS, FACS


"Management of Hearing Loss Related to Unilateral Aural Atresia"


Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to... 

  1. Review the development and anatomy of the pinna and ear canal
  2. Summarize the unilateral aural atresia epidemiology and its associated anomalies
  3. Discuss the various hearing aid options
  4. Describe treatment options and the alternatives

Dr. Carol LiuThis year for our Distinguished Visiting Professor keynote address, we welcome Dr. Yi-Chun Carol Liu. Dr. Yi-Chun Carol Liu, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Texas Children's Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is on children with hearing loss, chronic ear diseases, and microtia/atresia repair. She is currently the Associate Director of the Microtia and Atresia Clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH). In addition, she is also the co-director of the surgical subspecialty rotation. Her practice includes managing children with recurrent ear infections, chronic otitis media with effusions, and Eustachian tube dysfunction. Dr. Liu has been leading and actively participated in several clinical outcomes and human research projects and is familiar with appropriate protocols for safeguarding patient information, ensuring patient safety, and successfully completing research protocols. Her goal is to continually improve and develop specific diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for pediatric ear disorders.

"In Case You Missed it - Medicine Has Changed – What Every MD Should Know About Managing Risk in the Era of Complexity"

  3. Illustrate the complex nature of technology and the accelerating rate of progression
  4. Summarize the paradoxical "Peltzman Effect"
  5. Review research exposing medical security problems
  6. Describe the path forward - what are rational next steps?

Dr. Simon KirbyDr. Kirby completed an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. Subsequently, Dr. Kirby completed medical school at Memorial University. Following graduation, he completed a residency in Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Western Ontario. Further surgical training took him to Philadelphia for a fellowship in microvascular reconstruction with Dr. Richard Hayden. Dr. Kirby then travelled to Los Angeles for facial plastic surgery training. In 1999 Dr. Kirby published award-winning pioneering work regarding the use of neural networks for prediction in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. This was one of the first clinical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Kirby retrained as an anatomical pathologist. He is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Lab Medicine and Surgery, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Kirby is cross-appointed to the faculty of engineering. Dr. Peter HwangThis year for our Distinguished Visiting Professor keynote address, we welcome Dr. Peter Hwang, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He serves as Chief of the Division of Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery and is Past President of the American Rhinologic Society. Dr. Hwang has served extended tenures as Associate Editor of the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology and Associate Editor of the World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Hwang has authored or co-authored over 250 manuscripts, book chapters, and textbooks, including the award-winning textbook Rhinology: Diseases of the Nose, Sinuses & Skull Base. Dr. Hwang is actively involved in training fellows and residents and is a featured speaker at conferences worldwide. He has consulted for a number of successful Silicon Valley biotech startups and is co-founder of Third Wave Therapeutics.

 

DISTINGUISHED GUEST ALUMNUS - DR. EYTAN DAVID


"VEMPs, Vestibular Retraining, and Vinyl vs Digital: An Auditory Vestibular Narrative"


Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to... 

  1. Describe the clinically meaningful parameters in VEMP testing
  2. Review the results of a pilot study of vestibular retraining on self-perceived dizziness symptoms
  3. Review the results of a pilot study of vestibular retraining using objective parameters
  4. Appreciate the commonalities between the auditory and vestibular systems
  5. Describe digital versus analog high fidelity music reproduction and the latter’s implications for the vestibular system

Dr. Eytan DavidDr. Eytan David completed his Otolaryngology residency at Western University in 2001, having received research awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Triologic Society Eastern Section. He continued to pursue a Fellowship in Otology and Neurotology at the University of Toronto. Eytan returned to Vancouver in 2002 as a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Otolaryngology at the University of British Columbia and Lions Gate Hospital. In the past 20 years, Eytan has enjoyed family life, skiing, and a busy otologic practice. With his latest chapter on ear surgery in Gray’s Surgical Anatomy (2020), there has been a recreational return to publishing on auditory vestibular topics including vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, and peripheral vestibular deficits. He is proud to have welcomed two recent Western University Department of Otolaryngology alumni into the LGH Division of Otolaryngology.

"CREATING AN EFFECTIVE PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM IN AN OTOLARYNGOLOGY-HEAD AND NECK SURGERY DEPARTMENT: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGE"


Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to... 

  1. Describe the key elements and activities that are critically important for creating a culture that is supportive of safety and quality improvement.
  2. Recognize the critical importance to best patient care using a framework for success.
  3. Understand expected challenges associated with implementing this framework as well as strategies for overcoming hurdles.
  4. Review real world examples to facilitate discussion amongst peers in attendance.

 

Dr. Brian NussenbaumThis year for our Distinguished Visiting Professor keynote address, we welcome Dr. Brian Nussenbaum, who is the Executive Director of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1994 and completed a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2000. He joined Washington University School of Medicine in 2002 after completing a two-year head and neck oncology and microvascular fellowship at the University of Michigan Health System. He completed the Masters in Healthcare Management (MHCM) degree program at the TH Chan Harvard School of Public Health in May 2018.

While a faculty member at Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Nussenbaum served as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Otolaryngology, Division Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, Co-Director of the Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery and chair of the Conflicts of Interest Review Committee (CIRC) for the School of Medicine. He became well known nationally with respect to the clinical management of head and neck cancer. He was also the Patient Safety Officer in the Department of Otolaryngology since 2009, and has been active on both local and national levels with advancing the patient safety/quality improvement (PSQI) movement. He has lectured extensively about head and neck cancer and PSQI, and served leadership roles in these areas with several national organizations. He was previously grant funded through the National Institutes of Health for research on the BMP pathway as related to oral cancer and through local funding sources for several PSQI initiatives. Dr. Nussenbaum has greater than 125 peer-reviewed publications.

Nationally, Dr. Nussenbaum was elected to be the co-chair for the Recurrent-Metastatic Disease Task Force of the Head and Neck Steering Committee for the NCI/NIH. He completed a four-year term as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Middle Section of The Triological Society, and was the Middle Section Vice President for this organization in 2015. He was elected to the Nominating Committee for the AAO-HNSF in 2013. Dr. Nussenbaum is currently the Secretary-Treasurer of the Society of University Otolaryngologists (SUO). He currently serves on the editorial boards of Oral Oncology, JAMA Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and ENT Today. Nussenbaum was the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award from the AAO-HNSF in 2013.

Dr. Nussenbaum was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 2001. He participates in the Maintenance of Certification program for his board.

 

DISTINGUISHED GUEST ALUMNUS - DR. AMANDA HU


"UPDATE ON UNILATERAL VOCAL FOLD PARALYSIS"


Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to... 

  1. Understand and recognize unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) and identify potential consequences.
  2. Explore the etiologies of UVFP.
  3. Review the natural history and prognosis of recovery of vocal fold mobility
  4. Describe treatment options such as speech therapy, in-office vocal fold injections, medialization thyroplasty, laryngeal reinnervation, and laryngeal framework surgery.
  5. Explore a novel technique of laryngeal electromyography guided vocal fold injection of filler material.

 

Dr. Amanda Hu

For our Distinguished Guest Alumnus keynote address, we welcome Dr. Amanda Hu. Dr. Hu is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, University of British Columbia. She is sub-specialized in Laryngology (Care of the Professional Voice) and is the Director of the Pacific Voice clinic. Dr. Hu graduated from medical school at the University of Toronto (2006), trained in residency in Otolaryngology at Western University (2011), and completed a Laryngology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle (2012) with Dr. Albert Merati. She worked in Philadelphia at Drexel University with Dr. Robert Sataloff for 5 years prior to joining UBC in August of 2018.

Dr. Hu is currently the Undergraduate Medical Education Director for the ENT Division at UBC where she has a leadership role in training the UBC medical students. She is actively involved with research and is the author of 76 peer reviewed papers, 9 book chapters, and 64 conference presentations. Dr. Hu is the recipient of local, national, and international awards, including the H. Rocke Robertson Teaching Award from UBC, the Harold Myers Award for Distinguished Service from Drexel University, the Physician 40 under 40 Award from the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
.

Distinguished Visiting Professor - Dr. Albert Merati

Dr. Albert MeratiThis year for our Distinguished Visiting Professor keynote address, we welcome internationally renowned Otolaryngology specialist, DR. ALBERT MERATI, Professor and Chief of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington, and 2018-19 AAOHNS President. His medical training includes a medical degree from the Seattle University of Washington, with an Internship in General Surgery at the San Diego University of California, a Residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and a Research training fellowship in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Division of Head and Neck Surgery at the San Diego University of California, and a Fellowship at the Nashville Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. We look forward to his talk highlighting his clinical interests in operative laryngology that includes complex airway, voice, and swallowing – in addition to his research focus on vocal cord paralysis, tracheotomy complications, management of airway stenosis, and the impact of reflux on laryngeal disorders. Our Department is proud to highlight that two Western graduates, Dr. Maya Sardesai (‘07) and Dr. Amanda Hu (‘11) completed their laryngology fellowship training with Dr. Merati and are currently in academic practices at the University of Washington and University of British Columbia respectively. Dr. Merati will serve as a Research Adjudicator for our event.

Dr. Gregory Chernoff

For our Distinguished Guest Alumnus keynote address, we welcome the internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon  DR. GREGORY CHERNOFF. This presentation is always highly anticipated, and this year is no exception. Dr. Chernoff is known for his dedication to the art and science of cosmetic surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and laser therapy. Following medical school in Saskatoon, Dr. Chernoff completed his Otolaryngology residency at Western in 1992. He completed his first fellowship in Canada in flow cytometry and laser surgery. His second fellowship was completed in Indianapolis, Indiana in Head and Neck Surgery, Microvascular Surgery, Breast, and Body Contouring. The third fellowship was completed at the University of California in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chernoff is a pioneer of both surgical and non-surgical laser therapy techniques which are used world-wide. His research data is used by companies searching out FDA approval for therapies and technologies. We anticipate his talk which will focus on his latest research and advancements in cosmetic and plastic surgery, and laser therapy. Dr. Chernoff will serve as a Research Adjudicator for our event.
