A message from Dr. Lorne Parnes

I am delighted that you are reading this second annual alumni eNewsletter from the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Since the last newsletter, our Department family has been growing strong. Two of our faculty members, Dr. Josee Paradis and Dr. Leigh Sowerby, recently welcomed baby Nicholas and baby Elyse respectively, while two more, Julie Strychowsky and our most recent recruit, Dr. Elise Graham are expecting.

Also two of our senior residents, Drs. Horace Cheng and Peng You, welcomed baby Nolan and baby Evan respectively. You can read the alumni update section for more extended family and career updates.

To quote my favourite coach and leadership author John Wooden, "the most important thing in the world is family and love."

Our final year residents Drs. Rakhna Araslanova, Horace Cheng and Chris Dwyer were successful in passing their Royal College exams, and all will be doing world class fellowships. Rakhna will be doing hers in Craniofacial Surgery in New York City. Horace will be doing his in Otology in Sydney, while Chris will be in San Francisco studying Laryngology. We are extremely proud of their successes.

And by almost every indicator, the 2019 Residents' Research Day was a rousing success. The resident presentations were of the highest quality and our visiting speakers Drs. Al Merati and Greg Chernoff were exceptional. Attendance was strong with alumni travelling in from coast to coast, and our sponsorship was higher than ever. We hope to see many of you next year on May 1, 2020, when our visiting speakers will be the ABOto executive director Brian Nussenbaum, and our inspirational alumnus Simon Kirby.

We bid adieu to Dr. Syd Sukerman this year after his illustrious 40 plus year tenure with our Department, and we wish him well in his retirement.
