A message from Dr. Kevin Fung, Chair/Chief

Dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for having the privilege of leading this world-class academic Department.

Our faculty, residents, students and professional staff have collectively forged a path of excellence in clinical care, research and education that is unparalleled.

This year has been extremely productive, and there is a great deal of news to share. I’m pleased to give you just a few updates from the past year. There is more news throughout the newsletter and on our website.

  • Drs. Kathryn Roth and Leigh Sowerby were successful in their promotions to Associate Professor;
  • Dr. Brian Rotenberg was appointed the MAC Chair for St. Joseph’s Health Care London and Dr. John Yoo was appointed Acting Chair/Chief for the Department of Paediatrics;
  • We welcomed a new faculty member, Dr. Elise Graham who is a paediatric Otolaryngologist, and comes to us from Dalhousie University, having recently completed a paediatric fellowship at the University of Utah;
  • During the summer of 2018, we held our first Resident Wellness Retreat, which was an amazing success. It will continue to be an annual event;
  • In keeping with our focus on distributed medical education and in the spirit of regionalization and collaboration with our Southwestern Ontario partners, in November 2019, Dr. Jayant Ramakrishna will host our Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Update in Kitchener/Waterloo, which is our first such continuing medical education event held outside of London;
  • Our Department continues to be an engine of research, with The Auditory Biophysics Lab, led by Dr. Sumit Agrawal and Hanif Ladak, PhD, and The Head and Neck Translational Lab, led by Dr. Anthony Nichols obtaining Tri-Council Funding, publishing dozens of high impact papers, and training several graduate trainees and postdoctoral scholars from around the world.

It’s been an exciting year, and we looking forward to continuing to achieve our goals with care, teaching and research.
