Biography

Dr. Shannon Arntfield received her MD from Western University in 2004. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2009 and subsequently completed a Master's of Science in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University in New York. After moving back to London in 2011, she began the "Narrative Medicine Initiative" at Western University, for which she received an AMS Phoenix Fellowship. Currently, she is an associate professor at Western University where she works as a clinician-educator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In September of 2020, she transitioned to a part-time practice; in this model, she provides individual care for gynecology patients, and shared care with Dr. Erin Lovett for obstetrical patients.

Clinically, Dr. Arntfield is a general obstetrician-gynecologist caring for women across their lifetime of female and reproductive health. She has a small focus in patients with genetic risk for pelvic cancer, such as those carrying BRCA or Lynch gene mutations, and works closely with the breast and oncology teams to provide collaborative care. She has training and interest in supporting those who have experienced trauma. When operating, she does the majority of her work using laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques.

Academically, Dr. Arntfield has a focus in quality improvement, and co-chairs the Gynecology Quality Care Committee. She applies her background in Narrative Medicine in her approach to education at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, where she leads a teaching series involving narrative and reflection for ob/gyn residents, and chaired the longitudinal Portfolio Course at UME from 2013-2020.
