Electives for Trainees in Canada (Outside Ontario)
CPSO License Required
To participate in a residency or fellowship elective in Ontario, you must hold a valid license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). Apply at least 2 months before your elective start date. You cannot begin your rotation without this license. It is your responsibility to ensure all requirements are met.
Application and Approval Process
For trainees enrolled at Canadian institutions outside Ontario, regardless of citizenship.
To ensure your elective is fully processed and approved, follow the steps below in order. Missing steps or documents may delay your start date.
Contact your desired training program directly to:
- Request your elective
- Provide your proposed start and end dates
Once the program approves your elective dates, email the following to Tara Coletti:
- Date of birth
- Elective start and end dates
- PGY level at time of elective
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Copy of medical degree (photo accepted)
- CPSO number (if previously licensed in Ontario)
- Letter of support from your home program: must confirm approved elective dates
After your documents are received:
- Your application is reviewed by the PGME Office
- A Letter of Appointment (LOA) is prepared and emailed to you
- Sign and return the LOA
- Once returned, the PGME Office will forward your LOA to the CPSO.
Submit the application form and fee payment immediately, do not wait to submit any supporting documentation listed in your Schedule of Requirements.
You will receive a hospital application package from Medical Affairs via email. This includes:
- Training modules
- Hospital position letter to sign and return
- Health review form & required documentation
Note:
If your elective is at a Distributed Site, you will not receive a hospital application package.
Important:
Your elective cannot begin until all Medical Affairs requirements are completed and approved.
- PGME monitors for your CPSO license issuance
- Once issued:
- Email notification is sent to you, the Program Director, and Medical Affairs
Once all steps are complete:
- PGME will email you, your Program Director, and Medical Affairs that your elective is approved and processed.
- Medical Affairs will email to confirm:
- All requirements are met
- Hospital privileges are active
Wait for clearance from PGME & Medical Affairs before undertaking any clinical activity
