Electives for Trainees Enrolled in Ontario

Application and Approval Process

To ensure your elective is fully processed and approved, follow the steps below in order. Missing steps or documents may delay your start date.

Contact your desired training program directly to:

  • Request your elective
  • Provide your proposed start and end dates

Find Program Contact Info

Once the program approves your elective dates, email the following to Tara Coletti:

  • Date of birth
  • College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) license number
  • Elective start and end dates
  • PGY level at time of elective
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Letter of support from your home program: must confirm approved elective dates

After your documents are received:

  1. Your application is reviewed by the PGME Office
  2. A Letter of Appointment (LOA) is prepared and emailed to you
  3. Sign and return the LOA
  4. Once returned, the PGME Office will forward your LOA to the CPSO.

You will receive a hospital application package from Medical Affairs via email. This includes:

  • Training modules
  • Hospital position letter to sign and return
  • Health review form & required documentation

Note:
If your elective is at a Distributed Site, you will not receive a hospital application package.

Important:
Your elective cannot begin until all Medical Affairs requirements are completed and approved.

Review Medical Affairs Requirements

Once all steps are complete:

  • PGME will email you, your Program Director, and Medical Affairs that your elective is approved and processed.
  • Medical Affairs will email to confirm:
    • All requirements are met
    • Hospital privileges are active

Wait for clearance from PGME & Medical Affairs before undertaking any clinical activity
