Observerships
Observerships are non-clinical experiences that allow individuals to observe healthcare environments at in the hospitals. Observers are not permitted to participate in any patient care activities, including:
- Take medical histories
- Perform physical examinations
- Diagnose or treat patients
- Order, prepare, or administer medications
- Document in patient health records
- Access patient records independently
- Assist in procedures or surgeries
- Obtain patient consent
- Interact directly with patients or SDMs
- Provide healthcare advice
How to Request an Observership
Reach out to the Program Administrator in your area of interest to confirm:
- Observership availability
- A Credentialed Professional Staff sponsor (Physician, Dentist, or Midwife)
- The department will provide the Observership Application Package.
- Ensure all forms are completed and signed.
- Submit the package to Medical Affairs (contact information will be provided in the package).
- Medical Affairs will contact you directly with further instructions.
Inviting an International External Student
Schulich faculty and staff who wish to invite an international student for an observership must follow the process outlined by the Schulich Internationalization Office.
International students are required to complete additional documentation with Western University to confirm their legal Immigration status in Canada.
