Faculty Collective Agreement (UWOFA)
The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association represents full-time professors of the University (other than clinical faculty) and also part-time faculty with duties equivalent to teaching at least 0.5 degree credit course in each of 2 of the last 3 fiscal years. The Office of Faculty Relations and the Office of Recruitment for academic staff and is responsible for providing expert advice, support, and leadership on matters relating to Western’s faculty (unionized and non-unionized) and librarians and archivists.
Clinical Academics (Full-Time & Part-Time)
Physicians granted appointments to the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry will normally be appointed as Clinical Academics.
In 2018 the Board of Governors of Western University approved a significantly revised Conditions of Appointment for Physicians (CAP). This document provides processes and criteria for appointment, promotion and the granting of Continuing Appointment and other appointment related conditions for physicians appointed to the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry as Clinical Academics.
It would be valuable for Clinical Academics to review this process to gain an understanding of the appointments and promotions steps and processes.
Adjunct Appointees
These policies and procedures apply to those individuals:
• Who have no other faculty appointment with the University other than outlined in this
document;
• Who ordinarily receive no remuneration from The University of Western Ontario through this
appointment, although in exceptional cases may receive a modest stipend; and
• Who are not, and will not be, eligible for Membership in the Bargaining Unit of The University of
Western Ontario in the fiscal year(s) (May 1 to April 30).
Affiliated Institute Scientists
The policies and procedures shall apply to those individuals defined herein as Scientists who:
• Are full-time employees of an institution or similar organization affiliated with the University
and who normally hold an earned doctorate or equivalent qualification;
• Are not full-time employees of the University;
• Are paid directly by the affiliated institution;
• Ordinarily receive no remuneration from The University of Western Ontario although in
exceptional cases may receive a small stipend;
• May hold a cross-appointment in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry or a casual appointment
elsewhere within The University of Western Ontario; and
• Are not eligible for Membership in the Bargaining Unit of The University of Western Ontario.

Faculty Promotions
Most Clinical Academics will join the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry under the rank of Assistant Professor. As outlined in the Conditions of Appointment for Physicians (CAP) document, Clinical Academics must achieve the career rank of Associate Professor within 7 years of their initial appointment.
Clinical Faculty who are headed towards promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor can participate in a free learning experience through the CPD office. The workshop is a combination of Asychronous and Synchronous learning organized in a “Flipped Classroom” format. The workshop is entitled “How to Get Promoted - Clinical Academics from Assistant to Associate Professor” and more information can be accessed here.

Acuity Star is the platform used by the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry to help full time clinical faculty members log and track their academic activity and performance. It is vitally important that full time clinical faculty members become familiar with Acuity Star and it is highly recommended that information is kept up to date on a regular basis.
Acuity Star is the software that is used to generate much of the materials that are included with your application to promotion. These materials include your Professional CV and Teaching Dossier, among others. By regularly entering your academic activities into Acuity Star your preparation for promotion will be significantly simplified
