Undergraduate

Pre-clerkship

Our program works closely with the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in developing an integrative curriculum for pre-clerkship years. Primary taught by ED faculty, during year 1 & 2 medical students, medical students are exposed to the fundamentals of POCUS principles. Done in combination with the clinical skills program, along with asynchronous modules throughout.

Senior Medical Student Elective

Our POCUS program offers an M4 senior medical student elective. Designed for medical students in their most senior year, the objectives are to expose students to a wide range of POCUS applications in the Acute Care environment and teach fundamental POCUS skills. Postgraduate

FRCPC-EM

As part of the Royal College EM program we offer a comprehensive educational experience.

1-month junior block in PGY-1: Learners engage in a dedicated block that combines learning POCUS fundamentals (E-FAST, Aorta, OB, Gallbladder, Renal, core cardiac, thoracic, peripheral nerve blocks) in didactic lectures with supervised scanning shifts. Rotators also are paired with POCUS faculty for clinical integration and on shift learning.

1-month senior block in PGY-3: In a block focused on extended POCUS applications, senior residents are taught advanced cardiac (quantitative), major plexus nerve blocks, Transesophageal Echo (TEE), Testicular, Ocular, DVT and other topics of interest

Longitudinal training happens throughout the 5-year program, as residents are encouraged to submit their POCUS scans for QI review.

CCFP-EM

Introductory summer boot camp

1-month block that involves 2 x 3 hours of direct supervised scanning each week

Assigned ER shifts with POCUS experts within the division, the learners will be taught how to integrate their POCUS skills within the clinical environment on patients with clinical pathology. This includes clinical scenarios involving resuscitation, diagnostic and procedural purposes.

Every month throughout the year, a focused 1-hour

Elective

We offer a 1-month Acute Care POCUS elective for postgraduate trainees aimed at integrating POCUS skills in both critical and urgent clinical situations in the ED. Prior POCUS experience is encouraged prior to undertaking.

Multiple sequential blocks can be explored depending on the desired ambitions of the learner

Fellowship/AFC

Our program offers fellowship in POCUS since 2016 and is

A 12-month accredited Acute care POCUS area of focused competency (AFC) training program is offered as part of our program.

Focused fellowships of 6-9 months in length can also be explored depending on learner needs.
