Curriculum
Western’s CCFP(EM) program offers residents an exceptional breadth of clinical exposure designed to prepare them for the full spectrum of emergency medicine practice. Training is based at London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph's Health Care, and regional partner hospitals, offering a high-volume, high-acuity environment balanced with community-based experiences.
Western CCFP(EM) residents work collaboratively in various aspects of their training with their peers in the FRCPC emergency medicine residency program.
The Western CCFP(EM) Academic Full Day takes place weekly and is a cornerstone of the program’s educational experience. Protected from clinical duties, residents engage in a full day of high-yield, interactive learning that includes:
- Summer school boot camp: summer long rigorous academic sessions directed towards building foundations in emergency medicine (including hands on casting, US nerve blocks workshop, POCUS bootcamp, etc)
- Case-based teaching aligned with EM core topics
- Simulation sessions focusing on resuscitation, crisis resource management, and procedural skills
- POCUS image interpretation and scanning tips
- Journal clubs and evidence-based medicine
- Exam preparation through practice OSCEs and SAMPs
- Guest lectures from EM leaders, subspecialists, and allied health experts
- Transition to Practice: various topics geared towards non-clinical aspects of practice (complaints and medicolegal, finances, wellness & burnout, etc)
This structured academic time reinforces clinical knowledge, fosters critical thinking, and prepares residents for both the CFPC(EM) exam and independent practice.
