Application and Selection
Family medicine residents interested in a focused career in emergency medicine are encouraged to apply to the CCFP(EM) program at Western.
Our selection team will be looking for residents who have been successful during their FM residency, satisfactorily completing their training. Electives in London, Ontario and associated regional hospitals are highly encouraged. Research acumen will be an asset for our program as will emergency medicine preparedness as evidenced by electives in EM and attendance at conferences and courses in EM. Participation in other EM related activities will be viewed favourably by the selection committee. PoCUS skills are encouraged, but not required.
Fairness Program
The Western CCFP(EM) program has embarked on a fairness initiative and all applications to the program will be screened on the basis of merit and qualities, while minimizing biases.
The fairness initiative we have adopted has identified the following key features that we will be supporting and looking for in an application. These features are comprised of 9 key qualities that would be important to have in an application. These qualities are:
- Critical thinking
- Ethical decision-making
- Ability to tolerate ambiguity
- Communication including giving and taking instruction
- Empathy
- Resilience, boundaries recognition and self-awareness
- Collaboration and advocacy
- Integrity and taking responsibility for actions
- Respect for others and fulfillment of resident duties
