Meet the Associate Dean, EDI-D

Dr. Sukhveer (Sukhi) Bains, MD, MA

Acting Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EDI-D)

 Dr. Sukhveer Bains

Dr. Bains was appointed to this inaugural role in the fall of 2022 and she is a practicing emergency medicine physician. She is a triple board-certified physician in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Addiction Medicine. She completed her undergraduate and post graduate education at Western University in Sociology and her M.D degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She came back to Western after working at the University of Illinois at Chicago, focusing on social medicine, health equity, and addiction medicine. Her interests also include medical education and structural determinants of health. She has led educational initiatives on health equity, supported healthcare-based housing first programs, and worked to improve addiction services in the state of Illinois. She is currently a member of the executive committee for the Center for Research in Health Equity and Social Inclusion and the EDI Central Working Group at Western University.

We recognize that our commitment to social accountability begins with a more inclusive school. Under Dr. Bains’ leadership, this office will work diligently to ensure that everyone has a place and a voice in our enterprise, to maximize the potential of our community. With her guidance, the school aims to embed equity and inclusion principles in everything we do to substantively impact the historic and structural inequities experienced by the communities we belong to and serve.  Her leadership will help connect and support the many people within and outside Schulich who are already doing great work, and those who seek to get involved but do not know where to begin. We hope to sustain and amplify our current momentum and call in everyone to do their part in this work so we can best respond to the pressing health needs of our region and beyond.
